Walker Lake is north of Hawthorne. There is a large herd of wild horses on the south end of the lake on Army property. Big Horn Sheep can often been seen in the area of the Walker Lake community and the road on the west side of the lake.

Mt Grant is west of Hawthorne and is 11,285′ elevation.

The Hawthorne Army Depot’s (HWAD) land mass covers most of the valley and the Army owns Mt Grant and other mountains in the area. They are under the Joint Munitions Command (JMC) and the stated mission is: Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) stores conventional munitions, demilitarizes and disposes of unserviceable, obsolete and surplus munitions; and maintains serviceability through inspection and renovation to ensure munitions readiness.

There are many interesting sites within a day trip from Hawthorne such as the ghost town of Bodie, Mono Lake and the Mono Lake Visitor’s Center, Tioga Pass with a high view into Yosemite National Park, and other attractions. Efforts are being made to have individuals who know the area be able to take visitors to some of these places. Call Betty to see if someone is available.

Flying over the area gives wonderful views of interesting mountain terrain, valleys, and mines.
